Paravano, Dino (1935 – )

Dino Paravano

Dino Paravano was born in Rome, Italy but moved to South Africa with his family in 1947. He
started painting at a young age, Initially he was educated by his father, thereafter he attended the
Johannesburg College of Art. In 1992 he and his wife, Kiki,moved to Arizona in the United States.

Paravano is an international artist. Since 1966 he has held 14 one-man exhibitions in the major cities
of South Africa as well as New York and London. He has also participated over 190 group exhibitions
internationally, over 90 of which were international museum shows. Paravano’s works are in museums,
corporate and private collections around the world, including South Africa, United Kingdom, United
States, Australia, Europe and the Orient.

In 1995 it marked the ninth consecutive year that he was part of the prestigious “Birds in Art” exhibition
held by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. In 1993 in the “Birds in Art”
exhibition, Paravano received the prestigious honour, Master Wildlife Artist. He has also received
numerous other awards worldwide.

Dino Paravano

Born in Rome, Italy, in 1935, immigrated with his family to South Africa in 1947. At age 12. Art has always been an intrinsic part of Dino’s life. He started painting at an early age, tutored and encouraged by his amateur-artist father; recipient of a fine art Diploma from the “Institute of Fine Arts,” Rome. To further his studies Dino attended the Johannesburg College of Art, traveled to Europe on study tours, but in essence he is mainly self-taught. In 1964 Dino married Kiki, an Italian expatriate. They have a daughter and a son. Having reached his peak in South Africa, Dino wanted to expand his horizons and traveled often to the US, as well as many countries around the world. Subsequently Dino received international recognition. In 1992 Dino and Kiki emigrated from South Africa to the US. They live in Tucson, Arizona.

Since 1966 Dino has held 15, one-man exhibitions in South Africa’s major cities, plus New York city, London, England and Fairfax Virginia.

In 1970 a painting commissioned by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was presented to the South African State President, J. Fouche`, at a banquet. In 1974 his tour of the United States of America, Argentina and Brazil resulted in an invitation to hold a one-man exhibition in New York City in 1976.

Apart from the 15 solo exhibitions, to date Dino has participated in over 300 two and three–man, and group exhibitions in major centers in South Africa, England, Italy, Australia, US, Canada, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, Japan and China, Dubai, and Hong Kong. Has had work in the Audubon Society in Atlanta, Georgia and New York City, "Game Coin", San Antonio, Texas, "Safari Club International", Las Vegas and Michigan.

A signature member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists in New York, since joining in 1978, Dino’s work has been in all their annual exhibitions and subsequent year tours throughout the nation.

Dino has exhibited at the "Wilderness Congress", Johannesburg, SA and Colorado Springs, Colorado. The prestigious "Wildlife Artists of the World" and “Natural History Paintings and Sculpture exhibitions at the Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg S A. Wildlife shows at Trailside Galleries in Jackson, Wyoming, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Gallery Americana Carmel, California. Dino is a regular exhibitor at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson Wyoming, signature member of the Pastel Society Of America and exhibitor at the juried annual shows. Member of Oil Painters of America and has exhibited in their annual show.

Famous for his masterly portrayals of South Africa's sun-drenched landscapes, ocean scenes and wildlife, In 1983 Dino was commissioned by the National Parks Board for 10 paintings portraying all the National Parks in South Africa. These were published in 350 limited edition portfolios. He was also commissioned to paint the 5 major South African Harbors by Market Research Africa, reproduced in a limited edition portfolio and calendar. A limited edition portfolio: “Sea and Shore” by Swann Publishers.

In 1986 the Mala Mala Game Reserve (most famous private game reserve in South Africa) commissioned “The Big Five” which were published in a limited edition portfolio. The originals hang in their lodge. In 1983 Dino was awarded 2nd prize in an International Wildlife Exhibition held in Cincinnati Ohio, 1 of only 2 artists with all entries accepted from the works of more than 100 artists from 24 American States and 4 other countries. In 1984 he won Best of Show and an Honorable Mention for 2 entries at the Society of Animal Artists exhibition in New York City.

In 1990 he received the Award of Excellence for a pastel "Cheetah and Cubs" at the Society Of Animal Artists annual exhibition. In 1996 he won an award at the Night Walker ‘96 exhibition in Colorado and The Lispkin award from the Society of Animal Artists Society. Won 2 awards with 2 entries in “Wild Cat Art” 2001 exhibition, California. In 2004 Dino won 2 awards with the Pastel Journal competition, 2 awards with the “Artist’s magazine” competition. In 2005 won 2 awards with the Pastel Journal competition and 1 award with the “Artist’s magazine”.

In 1988 he completed 7 Dioramas (with fellow artist, the late, Titta Fasciotti) at the South African Nature Conservation Center Museum, Johannesburg.

Dino illustrated 2 volumes by best seller author, the late, Peter Hathaway Capstick. "The Last Horizons" was released in January 1990 and "Death in a Lonely Land" in 1991. 4 paintings included in the limited edition book "The Kill" published in early 1989. Images for the fronts’ piece of the next 3 titles (of a series): "In Full Flight" 1992, "Taverns of the Wild" 1993 and " Living Places." With 45 drawings and 8 paintings Dino has illustrated a limited edition book "Hunting in Botswana" by Tony Arinõ Sanchez, published by Safari Press, California. He has 4 paintings depicted in the book “South African Reserve Bank Art Collection,” 9 paintings in "African Wildlife In Art," a coffee table book published by Clive Holloway Books, London. Illustrated article in "Catasus," published by the Society of Animal Artists. Featured on the cover of Hunters Quest magazine 1991. Featured in Wildlife Art News in 1992 and in 2005. "American Artist" in 1989. “The Artists Magazine,” in 1990. “Sporting Classics” – 1993, 1996, 2007. “The Pastel Journal,” 2000. 1 of his paintings is mentioned in the novel "Gold Mine" by famous author Wilbur Smith (later made into the movie "Gold"). Dino is included in Who’s Who in Southern Africa (1989), The Dictionary of South African Painters and Sculptors (1988), International Who’s Who of Intellectuals (1993/1994), Men of Achievement (1995) International Man of the Year (1992/1993), published by The Biographical Center, Cambridge, England. The Stanford University of California requested to use “Broken Wing Bluff” a pastel, in a computer educational program. His work is in Birds Art Registry, California.

In September 1993 at the highly prestigious exhibition Birds in Art, Dino had the great honor of being chosen MASTER WILDLIFE ARTIST by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. During the 20-years of Birds in Art, 15 painters and 3 sculptors had been honored as “Masters” by the Museum.
