Van Heerden, Johan
Born in Bethal 6 January 1930. Preliminary education Lindley, O.F.S. Started an engineering course at the Bloemfontein Technical College which was soon abandoned in favour of part time Art classes there. In the meantime doing Commercial Art and photography . Left for Paris 1952, Academie de la Grande Chaumiere under tuition of Edouard Macavoy for painting, and later with Ossip Zadkine for sculpture.Studied Graphic Art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Edourd Goeig.Returned to South Africa at the beginning of 1955. Held first exhibition at Lidchi Art Gallery. Won first price for Transvaal Artists in Pretoria 1956 and was chosen from Southern Africa to represent the Africa- Europe Award exhibition . Exhibition Arts an Crafts Washington 1962. Taught at Art School Pretoria 1960-1961. All of the media in which Van Heerden has worked are closely integrated- the linear qualities of his graphics recur on his best works in wood and metal; the primordial landscapes symbolized in the fissured volumes of his ciment fondu sculptures were metaphorically restated in his drawn and painted compositions.
